The collection contains letters, photographs, and genealogical information on the Woodward family, particularly correspondence to and from John Douglas Woodward, artist, and his wife, Maria Louise Simpson Woodward, during his travels in France, England, Israel, Egypt, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Russia, and other countries. Major correspondents include twenty-four letters from Mary Mildred Minor Woodward of Richmond, Va., to her son John D. Woodward, thirty letters from John D. Woodward to his wife, and 130 letters from Mr. and Mrs. John Douglas Woodward to Mrs. J.P.L. Woodward. Other correspondents are John Pitt Lee Woodward, Virginia L. Minor, Helen Simpson, E.L. Adams, and relatives. John D. Woodward's letters relate to his work and travels as an illustrator and include pen-and-ink drawings.
